Late last year, the Utah Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Utah Division of Water Rights (DWR), and Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands (FFSL) joined together to file motions to dismiss litigation against them. The lawsuit, filed by Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment (UPHE), American Bird Conservancy (ABC), Center for Biological Diversity (CBD), the Sierra Club and Utah Rivers Council (URC) alleges that the agencies have breached their Public Trust duties by failing to maintain the Great Salt Lake at a minimum healthy elevation of 4,198 feet, which is necessary to protect public trust uses such as navigation, commerce, brine shrimp fishing, recreation, and ecological integrity.
The hearing on this motion can be observed by the public, and we encourage those with an interest in Lake health and management to attend virtually.
