An Instructional Model: The instructional strategies advocated by PROJECT SLICE program philosophy are based upon an instructional model. The model we have adapted is derived from the work of BSCS, which was itself an outgrowth and expansion upon earlier work in educational research, including that of Robert Karplus and his SCIS Learning Cycle.

students-lake3.jpgThis instructionmal model is grounded in constructivist philosophy, which assumes that every learner has a set of experiences he or she brings to the classroom. The premise is that as educators, we do best by providing common experiences for all learners so that they can build on what they already know in order to construct new knowledge.

The instructional model contains fi ve successive stages-Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate or, the 5 E's. This instructional model conforms to Constructivist Learning theory insofar as it acknowledges the belief that learners learn best when they are allowed to construct their understanding of concepts.
