Keeping the Lake Wet: A Water Appropriation for Great Salt Lake

April 28, 29 & 30 – 2010
University of Utah, Salt Lake City

Projected population growth, increased water diversions, water quality, predicted trends in climate change, and increased industrialization on the lake are compelling reasons to consider a "conservation pool" for Great Salt Lake. It's time to start asking the hard questions about how much water is needed to maintain the ecological integrity of the lake and sustain the delivery of ecosystem services. The goal of the 2010 GSL Issues Forum is to begin a process. A process that focuses our attention on the future of the lake and how water fits into that picture. Northwest Quadrant Master Plan Threatens Great Salt Lake

In the coming weeks, the Salt Lake City Council will likely be asked to vote on the proposed Northwest Quadrant Master Plan. This plan raises many concerns for Great Salt Lake and for Salt Lake City's growth patterns. The proposed development, located between Bangerter Highway (4000 West) and 8800 West and 2100 South to 3700 North covers 29 square miles and includes 25,000 housing units and 25 schools to support a population of over 70,000 people. This satellite development is 8 miles outside of Salt Lake City's downtown, is unconnected to other developed parts of the city, and is in close proximity to landfills containing contaminants such as arsenic. Since there is no infrastructure in place, the project would come at tremendous cost to taxpayers.

Dean L. May
We should bill the lake for what it is—a place of grandeur and solitude, which nourishes our thoughts and heightens our sensitivity to nature. Seen in that light, the brine flies become a fascinating curiosity more than an annoyance. The Great Salt Lake offers a wilderness experience, not a beach party, and no amount of promotion and development will change that. Dean L. May, Images of the Great Salt Lake
