Selenium Standards - The Next Steps
On May 28th, the GSL Water Quality Steering Committee voted to recommend a water quality standard for selenium in the open waters of Great Salt Lake to the Water Quality Board.

The final vote from the Steering Committee was:

    5 members voted for an EC<1 @ 5 mg Se/kg
    1 member voted for an EC 6 @ 10.4 mg Se/kg
    10 members voted for an EC 10 @ 12.5 mg Se/kg

Consensus was not achieved by the Steering Committee. Therefore, each of the three recommendations will be accompanied by a position paper to explain why those members voted as they did.

Far and Wide - Comments on Drilling near Spiral Jetty

There has been significant response from many corners of the art and enviromental communities to the application to drill for oil within 5 miles of Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty.   We have collected a number of links and pdf copies of articles in the "read more" segment.

Oil Drilling near The Spiral Jetty

On 7 January 2008, Pearl Montana Exploration and Production, LTD., requested a permit to drill exploratory wells in the north arm of the Great Salt Lake just five miles from Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty. Although the permit was earmarked to be fast-tracked, FRIENDS and others requested an extension for comments from the public until 13 February 2008. Please click below for a copy of the comments filed on behalf of FRIENDS and additional resources on the history of this important issue.

Save the dashing of the waves against the shore absolutely nothing is heard. Not the jumping of a fish, the chirp of an insect nor any of the least thing betokening life, unless it be that very rarely a solitary gull is disturbed in his midnight rumination and flies screaming away. All is stillness and solitude profound.
