Our fall 2010 Lakeside Learning field trips are full!
The Lakeside Learning program is a professional field trip support service offering educational field trips for 4th grade students. It is part of Project SLICE, a comprehensive standards-based initiative developed and administered by FRIENDS of Great Salt Lake. Activities consist of a combination of full-group gatherings for introductions, discussion or review, and small-group or team activities, where students work together to complete an assignment. Our field trip season runs 15 April through 15 October. Other dates may be available upon request. Trips are approximately 2.5 hours long and take place at Antelope Island State Park.
While a number of visitor-friendly locations exist around Great Salt Lake, Antelope Island State Park is one of the most attractive, developed, diverse and accessible field trip sites currently available. Our program activities and materials to date have been geared to that location. Our typical field trip program starts off with a visit to the playa, where we talk about wetlands, adaptations, the water cycle, and the unique features of Great Salt Lake. Next, we travel over the causeway for some birding, if possible. Our trips conclude with a visit to the beach at Ladyfinger Point where students learn about oolitic sand and wade in the lake for a hands-on experience with brine shrimp and brine flies. The Lakeside Learning fee of $1 per participant covers expenses pertaining to all advance organization and planning materials, facility reservations, instruction, gate entry, field equipment and field teaching supplies. In all cases, transportation costs and arrangements remain the responsibility of the guest group.** **We are pleased to offer transportation scholarships to groups who are accepted for a Lakeside Learning Trip. The maximum scholarship award for public schools is $250 per year per school (schools with exceptionally large 4th grade classes may qualify for additional funding). Private schools are eligible for funding, but at a reduced rate. The scholarship award is paid AFTER the trip takes place; the visiting school group is responsible for making ALL transportation arrangements.** How to apply for a Lakeside Learning FieldtripTo apply for a fieldtrip, send a completed Field Trip Leadership Training WorkshopsContact us about attending upcoming workshops or for arranging a Lakeside Learning Workshop for your own group. John C. Fremont
To travelers so long shut among the mountain ranges a sudden view over the expanse of silent waters had in it something sublime. Several large islands raised their rocky heads out of the waves. . . . Then, a storm burst down with sudden fury upon the lake, and entirely hid the islands from our view.
John C. Fremont, Report of the Exploring Expedition to the Rocky Mountains, 1845
