| Legacy Parkway: A NEPA Success Story |

The Legacy Project was initially proposed as a highway connecting Davis and Salt Lake Counties. The proposed alignment for the highway was near the shores of Great Salt Lake, and it threatened large areas of wetland habitat. Over several years, FoGSL collaborated with multiple stakeholders via the NEPA process to reduce the environmental impacts of the project. As a result of this collaboration, a parkway, rather than a highway, was created. When compared to a traditional highway, the Legacy Parkway reduces impacts on wetland areas and nearby habitats by meandering around sensitive areas. Due to its design and usage restrictions, the Parkway also produces less noise and disturbance. Included with this project decision was an expansion to the Legacy Nature Preserve, as well as funds to pursue multi-modal transportation within the corridor. Today, the Legacy Parkway is a State Scenic Byway and is accompanied by a 14-mile trail system. The Legacy project was recently included in the Environmental Law Institute's publication, "NEPA Success Stories: Celebrating 40 Years of Transparency and Open Government". View the publication here.
